Chatham-Kent, with its diverse landscapes and charming settings, offers a plethora of options for capturing beautiful moments. Whether you’re planning a wedding, engagement session, or family portrait, there’s something for everyone in this hidden gem of southwestern Ontario. Here is a collection of some of my favourite photography locations within Chatham-Kent along with some ideas for places I have yet to visit and a few options just outside of Chatham-Kent for those willing to travel.
Free Local Gems
Let’s start with some fantastic spots that don’t require booking in advance and do not charge any fees for use:
Maple Leaf Cemetery
Despite its solemn reputation, Maple Leaf Cemetery offers a tree-lined road and a fairytale-like bridge amongst a serene backdrop for capturing intimate moments making it a popular choice for Chatham, Ontario weddings and portrait sessions. Just be prepared for the occasional traffic, especially on Saturday afternoons.

O’Neil Nature Preserve
For a taste of nature’s beauty, O’Neil Nature Preserve, previously named Paxton’s Bush, beckons with its enchanting trails, particularly enchanting late Fall through early Spring when the foliage isn’t too dense and the lighting is just right.

Erieau Beach
Erieau Beach might require a bit of travel time, but trust me, it’s worth it. Erieau Beach boasts tall grass and a rustic wood boardwalk leading to a long beautiful sandy beach, providing a dreamy coastal vibe for your photos.

Mitchell’s Bay
While not the best spot for “beach” vibes, Mitchell’s Bay Trail offers a tranquil escape into nature where you’ll find paved trails lined with Weeping Willows and gorgeous sunsets, perfect for capturing candid moments away from the hustle and bustle.

Downtown Chatham
Downtown Chatham is a treasure trove of historic charm, with its vintage signs and weathered brick walls serving as the perfect backdrop for urban-inspired shoots.

Mud Creek Trail
Mud Creek is a hidden gem that travels the length of three municipal parks at the heart of Chatham-Kent. The trail itself is lined with native Carolinian trees planted by local students, and it passes by a tall prairie grass demonstration garden, making it a picturesque location for a variety of photo shoots. Best for small groups of 5 or less.

If you’re looking to travel a bit further…
Brander Park
Brander Park in Port Lambton offers a serene backdrop for your photo sessions. Bug spray is strongly recommended for this location.

Two Creeks Conservation
This hidden gem in Wheatley, Ontario promises stunning natural trails and lush greenery.

If you’re willing to invest a bit more and plan ahead, there are some exclusive venues and locations that offer a touch of luxury and sophistication.
Meadowcroft Estate
A lovely new spot for both weddings and portraits. Located in Blenheim, Ontario.
Retro Suites
Offering a unique blend of vintage charm and modern elegance right in the heart of downtown Chatham. While it’s free to use if you’re a guest, I believe you can also pay for access to their facilities if available.

Provides a romantic setting amidst vineyards and forest trails. Contact them directly for booking information.

CM Wilson Conservation Area
Offers breathtaking landscapes for a nominal fee. Contact the city to purchase a photography permit in advance of your session.

Floral Farms
If florals are your thing, you won’t want to miss these gems:

Hat Trick Farms
Colourful fields of tulips in the Spring and Winterberries in the Fall.

Serenity Lavender
Located in Essex, Ontario, Serenity Lavender provides a whimsical, romantic backdrop for your photos

Puddleford Tree Farm
Frolic amongst sunshine surrounded by blooms of gorgeous sunflowers at Puddleford Tree Farm in early July, or enjoy the festive spirit of their Christmas Trees in the winter.

Sloan’s Christmas Tree Farm
Another great option for cozy holiday vibes!

Local Orchards
Spring is the perfect time of year to visit a local orchard!

For the Animal Lovers:
Horses
TJ Stables and Hidalgo’s Homestead are two great local options that may be able to arrange a shoot on their properties with their horses.

Alpacas, Goats, Highland Cows and More!
For animal lovers looking to travel outside of Chatham-Kent, Sylvan Alpacas offers alpaca walks. Jireh Hills Family Homestead has goats and alpacas, and Jersey Ridge Mini Moos in Glencoe has two micro-mini highland cows available for cuddling.
Seeking Studio Vibes
Studio Sisters and Suni Creative Co. both provide studio options located in downtown Chatham that can be rented for capturing beautiful moments, rain or shine.

So there you have it, folks! Whether you’re dreaming of a bayside family session or a cozy indoor engagement shoot, Chatham-Kent has something to offer for everyone’s unique style and vision. So let’s explore the beauty that awaits us in this charming corner of Ontario.
